Growing Up on the Steppes
My name is Undarmaa. I was born and raised in Mongolia, where cashmere, yak wool, and camel wool were not primarily luxuries, but a natural part of everyday life. In a country with cold winters, vast distances, and a lifestyle close to nature, you learn early on that high-quality materials matter.
The nomadic life gave me an appreciation for wool, warmth, and quality that still stays with me today. It’s not just about softness, but about materials that work in the real world—and about the respect for animals, nature, and people that underlies it all.
My parents came back
My parents lived in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, for a while, but later chose to return to the countryside and the life they came from. They wanted a daily life closer to nature, the animals, and the nomadic way of life that has shaped our family for generations. That choice has had a profound impact on me.
When I visit my family in Mongolia today, it’s not just as a traveler. It’s a return to something I know from the inside: the landscape, everyday life, the animals, the materials, and the people who still live with nature as part of their daily lives.
From Denmark Back to Mongolia
Later, when I was living in Denmark, my connection to Mongolia continued to grow stronger. I missed not only the country itself, but also the materials: the light warmth of cashmere, the unique character of yak wool, and the calm, natural feel of camel wool.
Undarmaa was born out of a desire to bridge the two worlds. We wanted to bring Mongolian natural fibers into a Nordic wardrobe—simple, warm, and of a quality that not only looks good but can also be worn year after year.
Why Mongolia Is Still the Core
For us, Mongolia isn’t just about origin. It’s about being close to the materials and choosing products with greater care. When we work with cashmere, yak, and camel wool from Mongolia, we’re working with fibers that have a natural connection to the climate, the landscape, and the people who live alongside the animals.
That’s why Undarmaa isn’t built around fast-fashion collections either. We select a few products, refine them over time, and look for pieces that will continue to be meaningful additions to your wardrobe.
