Mongolia
A land of vast expanses, extremes, and a vibrant nomadic culture—and the inspiration behind everything we do.
Undarmaa began as a bridge between Denmark and Mongolia. To me, Mongolia isn’t just a place where wool comes from—it’s a whole way of life, close to nature and the animals that shape both the materials and the people behind them. Here’s a little about the country behind every sweater, every scarf, and every throw.
One of the world's least densely populated countries
Mongolia is a vast country—covering about 1.5 million square kilometers, more than 35 times the size of Denmark—but it is home to only about 3.4 million people. This makes Mongolia one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, with expanses of steppe, mountains, and desert stretching as far as the eye can see. The country is landlocked, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south, with no access to the sea.
A climate of extremes
Mongolia is known as "the land of the eternal blue sky" for its many clear days—but the climate is harsh. Winters are long and can reach −40 °C, while summers are short and hot. It is precisely these extremes that make the wool so special: to survive the cold, goats, yaks, and camels develop a dense, fine undercoat. Without the extreme climate, the fibers would not be what they are. Read about the materials.
The Land of the Nomads
About one-fifth of Mongolians still live as nomads or semi-nomads—they move with their herds with the changing seasons and live in close proximity to their animals. It is a way of life with deep roots, and it remains a daily reality for many. The herders’ knowledge—about the animals, about when to shear the wool, about reading the weather and the land—is essential to the quality of everything we do.
The Republic of Mongolia — not Inner Mongolia
There is a common misunderstanding we would like to clear up. Mongolia is an independent country—the Republic of Mongolia. Inner Mongolia is a province of China. Both have nomadic cultures and cashmere production, but they are not the same place. When we say that our materials and products come from Mongolia, we mean the Republic of Mongolia—the country, not the Chinese province.
