Sor yarn

Our Sor yak wool yarn is made in a small factory in Ulaanbaatar, where the work is done with great respect for the natural fibres and local traditions. The yarn consists of 100% yak wool from the Mongolian highlands – known for its softness, strength and natural warmth.

Each fibre comes from yaks that live in extreme temperatures, giving the yarn a unique ability to insulate while also feeling light against the skin. The colours Yak mocha and Yak dark brown are natural colours, undyed and completely without chemical treatment, so the authentic character of the yarn is preserved.

Yak wool stays beautiful longest with gentle handling. Air your garment between wears, and wash it in cold water with wool detergent. Dry flat and avoid wringing. Store folded rather than on a hanger to keep its shape.

Yak wool comes from the animal's soft undercoat, just like cashmere from the goat — it's not the guard hairs but the layer beneath that's used. It's combed out in spring, when the animal naturally sheds its winter coat.

A single yak yields enough wool for a whole sweater on its own — far more than a single cashmere goat can provide. Both the yarn and the knitting are made in Mongolia, the same place the animals live.
